BGIS initiates the revival of BGMI Esports in India

BGIS 2023 was the first official return to BGMI tournament by Krafton for the region of India. Players from all over the nation have been able to take part in the qualifying stages of the tournament. The tournament consisted of over 2000+ teams taking part in various stages to qualify for the grand final.

The Grand Final took place in Mumbai with the last day of the event taking place on the 15th of October.  Both days had fans come in thousands to get a chance to see their favorite esports player play in front of them. I got a chance to attend the event and talk to various players from different teams.

Gladiator Esports made sure to not give up on their dream

Gladiators were the team in second position after two days at BGIS, and ever closer to retain the crown as defending champions from winning the BGMS Lan event which took place earlier in the year. Not having the best start during day 1, it did seem like the pressure got to them.

Talking about this pressure their player Justin had the following to say.

“Now after day one it was like do or die for us today. If we had choked on Day 2 then this was there was no chance of winning on the third day. So definitely we we had to give a hundred percent today because It just matters a lot for us to be. The tournament started just now on the second day for us and we have found our momentum to play the final day with high spirits.”

Going into Day 3 it was a close battle between Gladiator and Big Brother Esports, and the final two rounds decided the final standings. The interesting part of this tournament was that Gladiator Esports did it all without winning a single match. Teams who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th had 3 Chicken Dinners to their name but Gladiator had zero.

The player I want to highlight is Pawan “SHOGUN” Kumar. He joined Gladiator Esports back in June this year and has already won two of the biggest tournaments of the year. It is true that 4 months ago no one really realised his potential in the game of BGMI.

Parth “DeltaPG” Garg won the Most Value Player Award for the Entire Tournament. Talking about the award as well as winning the Grand Final he had this to say:

“It feels soo good. The first game of day 3 wasn’t the ideal. Following that we had the clear mindset that we are just going to do out level best. Being the official MVP for this event is a very big achievement for me.”

Justin “Justin” Nadar one of the rising stars from this tournament had this to say when asked about his team living upto the expectations and winning another tournament

“This is the start of a new era for gladiators who are determined to achieve a hatrick in the India Korea Invitational, and the enthusiasm for the tournament is growing by the day. It is truly remarkable. It is a goal that every underdog, to be more precise, each professional player has dreamed of since they were children. And we all had the experience and it is something that cannot be described in words. It is simply too good to be true. “

Big Brother Esports were only 9 points away

Big Brother Esports played their first LAN event in front of fans. They were the first team to win back-to-back Chicken Dinners in games 11 and 12 on Day 2. Taking about their journey Uzumaki ( IGL) and Saif had the following to state:

“When Day 1 ended we were not in the best position. So we set our goal to be in the top 5 by the end of day 2. I (Uzumaki) had told my teammates not to take any form of pressure on themselves in the first few games. At the start of Day 1, there was a momentum shift against us and it took us a few games to get into the groove. Thus we could end on a high note.”

Taking about their incredible run with back-to-back wins on Day 2 Saif had this to say:

“We had decided that we want to get a minimum of 10 points during game 11. But the momentum just clicked between us and we got into our groove and then started going on the front foot. We were so confident that we could win every clash we had with a given team. After the first chicken dinner, we realised that the other teams were already under massive amounts of pressure. So it would favorable for us to put pressure on them from the start and not allow them to settle in. As we got towards the end we made sure that none of them felt confident enough to be to hold a given position on the map”

Day three was going great for Big Brother up until the last two games where they scored only 5 points in total, while Gladiator Esports scored 27 and made up all difference to earn the crown.

Saif from Big Brother Esports who won the MVP award for the Grand Finals spoke to us about the experience of playing in front of over 6000 fans. He said the following

“Day 3 started not in the ideal manner. We kept on trying after each match to do better. At the very end everyone knows about the choke point and we couldn’t get through it. We are sad that due to this we let the trophy slip away from our fingers”

Uzumaki the IGL for Big Brother Esports when asked about if his and his teams hunger to get to the top has reduced or increased exponentially he had this to say:

“I honestly believe this is just the beginning for Big Brother Esports as a team and for me as a player. Playing in our first Lan event and the method we have used to come 2nd, we discussed it at the back we still have a long way to go as a team. After the last match when we were backstage we were discussing that his feeling of losing at the every end we should remember it and make sure that we do our best to never feel this way again.”

This was an amazing LAN event, and really put BGMI back on the map in India. We’ve spent the better portion of this year speculating if BGMI can finally make a grand return to India and re-invigorate the scene.

The answer is a resounding YES.
